Why do you search for the living one among the dead?
He is not here, but he has been raised.
Luke 24:5
In the face of death, the Church confidently proclaims our Faith that God has created each of us and calls us to share in Eternal Life. We believe that Jesus Christ, Son of God, by His death and resurrection has broken the chains of sin and death and invites us to share in His Victory.
Just as a birthday party might be rightly understood to be a celebration of a person’s life, the Funeral Mass is Jesus Christ joining His Prayer to ours that the Heavenly Father in His great mercy look kindly on the Immortal Soul of our beloved deceased and grant them the joys of Eternal Life.
Since the Funeral Mass is the Church’s Prayer, only Readings from Sacred Scripture and Sacred Music are used.
Additionally, eulogies, or other forms of tribute which focus on a person’s earthly life, and look to the past, are best delivered at the Funeral Home, during the wake or vigil, at the graveside, or at a meal or gathering of family and friends after the Funeral. Such remarks cannot be part of the Funeral Mass which looks forward to our eternal homeland.
The purpose of this Funeral Planning Guide is to provide families with the opportunity to discuss the Readings from Sacred Scripture, Sacred Music, and the other details to Celebrate a Prayerful Funeral at Sacred Heart Parish.
Should you desire to meet with the Priest or Deacon to prepare for the Funeral, simply let us know. It is not required that you review any material prior to a meeting, but we have found that some families prefer to discuss the Funeral Mass and make decisions with input from their family members.
